Fire in the cockpit as MDC heads for elective Congress

Opposition Movement for Democratic Change plunges into an elective congress on July 2, 2022 following a dismal showing in the March 26, 2022 by-elections.
Blighted by a devastating loss at the hands of a newly formed offshoot outfit Citizens Coalition for Change, the country's biggest opposition by Parliamentary representation has left it's supporters wondering if the party still has what it takes to lead the country.
"It would be very surprising if such a tragic turn of fortunes does not invoke a sense of panic and desperation in the leaders of this once mighty opposition movement," said one supporter of the MDC on condition of anonymity for fear of victimisation.
The MDC-Alliance has haemorrhaged supporters to the CCC since the March 26 by-elections as the party leadership seem to be at sixes and sevens to explain to it's supporters what could have happened at the recent polls where it failed to win a single seat.
The party now resembles a gigantic white elephant and a pale shadow of it's former self.
"Mr Douglas Mwonzora has a lot of explaining to do to the people if he is to convince us to retain him as President of this once homongous party. The MDC has never lost an election since it's formation. It is now looking like Mr Mwonzora is the mercenary who is on a mission to destroy the party. His continued silence and indifference has not helped the matter," continued the concerned supporter.
The Party structures seem to agree that the party is currently cruising on autopilot as the President continues in hibernation. It’s a few months now before the next crucial elections, which could be held anytime in 2023, hence the call for the party to be organised and ready for the next plebiscite.
MDC supporters see no future in Senator Douglas Mwonzora's Presidency.
Sources in the MDC-Alliance suggest that Mr Mwonzora is set to face stiff competition at the congress as the majority of Provinces have already tipped Hon. Morgen Komichi to take over the reins at MRT House. Yet others are putting their bet on Engineer Elias Mudzuri as possible contender for the reigns.
Having watched his party fall by the wayside in a race which was characterised by poor funding structure and a disorganised campaign program, Mr Mwonzora is surely sweating for an explanation to the party faithfuls who are eager to find a way out of the present quagmire.
“It’s a matter of survival for the MDC and we are lucky that an opportunity to do the right things has presented itself in form of the forthcoming Congress set for July 2, 2022. Self renewal is urgent if the MDC is to survive for another decade ,” she said.
