Cellphone activity exposes Mamombe, Chimbiri

Mobile phone records belonging to Citizens Coalition for Change activists Joana Mamombe and Cecilia Chimbiri, show that the duo never left Harare on May 13, 2020, the day on which they claimed to have been arrested and later on ‘abducted’ and dumped somewhere in Musana the following morning.

Giving evidence before the Court, State witness number one, Engineer Tapera Kazembe revealed that records show that on the day in question, the duo never left Harare Metropolitan.

Records presented before Chief Magistrate Faith Mushure confirm that their cellphones were active on such social media platforms as Twitter and Instagram between 1400hrs and 2200hrs.

This is besides the fact that the two had not and still have not reported their phones stolen on that day.

The two are appearing in court for a routine remand hearing on allegations of spreading falsehoods and making statements prejudicial to the state.

The duo who now deny ever making any reports or communicating with anyone that they had been abducted, seem to forget the international outrage and condemnation that the country suffered at the reports of their abduction and subsequent testimonies they gave to the media from their hospital beds when the finally claimed to having been rescued.

In his testimony, Engineer Tapera Christopher Kazembe, who is spectrum manager at the Postal and Telecommunication Regulatory Authority of Zimbabwe (POTRAZ) said that indeed on the material time, there was user activity on the duo’s cellphones which is reflected on the amount of data used through browsing on social media sites.

The two are accused of faking their abduction and the state’s case is that It suffered as a result of their falsehoods.

The two are charged together with one Netsai Marova who absconded trial and skipped the borders to the United States where she got a study Visa.

Advocates Alec Muchadehama assisted by Jeremiah Bhamu appeared for the accused while Mr. Michael Reza prosecuted.

Next trial is set for March 31, 2022 in the same Court.
