Zimbabwe currency crisis: Time to face the truth

Obert Nyandoro THERE is, of course, no such thing as “a shortage of foreign currency”. In open and disciplined markets, all that such a claim reflects is an over-valued local currency, whose managers resist the simple law of supply and demand, at that point in time. As Zimbabwe’s Treasury and its reserve-less Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe implement the new 2024 Q1 monetary policy statement (MPS), they both must be mindful of this truism and their respective mandates. Time is long over-due to accept reality, face the truth, and embrace good governance. The foreign currency denominated debt Zimbabwe defaulted on two decade or so ago, should focus minds. And so should the unacceptable levels of poverty, income and food insecurity, all prevailing in the country. Equally important to bear in mind is the high levels of joblessness and under-employment in the country, the root cause of the poverty. An over-valued and unstable local currency, and the fraudulent “shortage of foreign currency i...

Thomas Mapfumo spurns Chivhayo offer

Thomas mapfumo is a cross-generational hero of Zimbabwe, make no mistake about it. Mapfumo cannot be bribed by young and childish Wicknell Chivhayo with an offer of a Car and a House, just so that Mukanya renounces his long-held criticism of corruption, economic mismanagement, and extravagance of current and past government officials. If you honestly thought the living legend Thomas Mapfumo who was arrested by Ian Smith's regime and imprisoned for six months without trial at Chikurubi Maximum Prison for singing "Hokoyo", "Nyoka Musango’’, "Pamuromo Chete’’, ‘‘Chiruzevha Chapera’’, "Nhamo Yamakandiwa’’, ‘‘Zevezeve’’, and ‘‘Kuyaura Kwevasina Musha’’ where he sang; "VaChitepo varipi vatitungamirire? Chembere dzekuno dziripi dzitipe makona, kutipa makona tiwane kuuraya mhandu . . . N’anga dzekuno driripi dzitipe makona tiwane kuraya mhanu yanesta . . . We will never let our guard down - Makamba

Hosia Mviringi ZANU PF Party has vowed to never let it's guard down in this year's campaign mobilisation program towards the August 23 elections. With only a week to go before the historic general elections, the party has refused to let complacency creep in despite all evidence pointing to a landslide victory. Despite pulling huge crowds to it's rallies countrywide, the revolutionary party has vowed to continue to pull all stops and redoubling it's mobilisation efforts to attain or surpass it's set target of five million votes for the party's Presidential candidate Cde Emmerson Mnangagwa. " ZANU PF, as has always been known, as the most organised political party in the country as seen by the momentum registered so far in this election campaign and the promise it brings for a successful poll. The momentum and zeal shown by cadres has progressively shattered attendance records as the President travels across the country on a mobilisation tou r." " W...

Telecel Zimbabwe corporate rescue a legal nullity - Makamba

Hosia Mviringi Telecel Zimbabwe, the country’s third largest Mobile Network Operator, has refuted claims that the company has been put under Corporate Rescue Proceedings as claimed in a Notice published in the government Gazette of 12 May 2023. In a statement to shareholders and all stakeholders, the company, through its Board Chairman, Dr. James Makamba said that the legal process by the Communication and Allied Workers Union of Zimbabwe, which was used as the basis for the Corporate Rescue Proceedings was successfully challenged at the High Court, rendering the Notice a legal nullity. “Telecel Zimbabwe (Pvt) Ltd wishes to assure the public, stakeholders, creditors, and all interested Telecel persons that it continues to provide its services as normal. An invalid legal process by the Communication and Allied Workers Union of Zimbabwe was lodged in the High Court of Zimbabwe under HC 306/22 in October 2022 through Gumbo and Associates legal practitioners. That application was opposed. ...

After 23 years, UK-ZIM relations thawing

#SundayMussings  Prof. Jonathan Moyo It's International Relations 101 that a penchant for and infatuation with trivialities is not part of diplomacy, it's trivial pursuit. With this in mind, one does not have to hold a brief for anyone to understand that the coronation of King Charles III was essentially a showcase of an archaic and obnoxious tradition of hereditary rule - frowned upon in most parts of the world now under republican rule of one sort or another, while still a big deal in the United Kingdom of once upon a time, Great Britain - that dates back some 1,000 years ago. There’s therefore nothing geopolitically significant or even interesting about that primitive culture, where someone called Charles was crowned head of state by virtue of his birth at a ceremony where "His Majesty's Government" had no qualms about displaying the full repertoire of imperial loot like the stolen African Star and majestic gold from former British colonies, many of whose lead...

We can create a city anywhere - Makamba

Dr  James Makamba   Hosia Mviringi When the news filtered in that Mt Darwin had been selected to host this year’s Independence celebrations, a first of its kind in independent Zimbabwe, the feeling amongst many skeptics was like, “How can Mashonaland Central Province afford to host such a massive event given the seemingly ‘inadequate’ infrastructure in the province?” Many skeptics doubted the ability for Mt Darwin, a rural district which has just been accorded town status to host an event of such a magnitude. A look at all feeder roads into Mt. Darwin town on April 18, 2023, the atmosphere resembled the euphoria that griped the nation on the same day in 1980 when Zimbabwe’s Independence was birthed. Roads were packed with both vehicular and human traffic, while long que formed outside the main venue at the newly opened Mt Darwin High School grounds (quickly nicknamed ED Mnangagwa Stadium).  Overnight, Mt Darwin was transformed and everyone from all over the country...
