Matiza in the Eye of a Storm

Matiza in the Eye of a Storm TRANSPORT and Infrastructural Development minister Joel Biggie Matiza is entangled in a multi-million dollar Civil Aviation Authority of Zimbabwe (Caaz) scandal after he reportedly authorised a €28 million (US$33,3 million) deal for Spanish company Indra Sistemas (Indra) without going to tender. The contract, which Matiza awarded to Indra in collusion with Caaz general manager David Chawota, is for the financing, supply and installation of an airspace management system to facilitate air traffic movements into and out of local airports. Zimbabwe is currently using an outmoded airspace management system, which exposes passengers to serious air traffic accidents. Official documents seen by the Zimbabwe Independent this week show that Chawota played a pivotal role in ensuring Indra was irregularly given the deal, while Caaz officials told the Independent that the minister authorised it after intense lobbying. A Caaz official who lobbied for the proj...
# August01 Report 18 December 2018 . I have not yet read the comprehensive report ( 1290 pages in total ),  but so far with the tidbits I got from the President's presentation I got the impression that this is a very balanced report. I must salute the President for being a man of his word.He stuck to the terms of reference of the Commission and its time frames. However I must salute him more for his bravery. This report incriminates the opposition first and foremost for planning,  instigating, abating, aiding and inciting the violent demonstrations on 01 August 2018. Some may say this was to be expected. But here is a catch. It incriminates his government too.Which leader would read out a report which incriminates the soldiers he commands ? It is notes in the report that the depoyment of the Army was justified and in accordance with the Constitution. Yet the soldiers are cited as having used excessive force against unarmed and fleeing civilians. This include use of b...

Why are the 'Yellow Vests' protesting in France ?

OPINION/FRANCE Why are the 'yellow vests' protesting in France? The wave of protests sweeping through France is not a rejection of green policies. It's a revolt against the 1 percent.  by Rokhaya Diallo Zimbo24news For the past three weeks, France has been experiencing one of the most significant social mobilisations in its recent history, which laid bare the country's social ills, anti-elite sentiment, growing inequalities and thirst for social justice. It all started on November 17 when tens of thousands of people took to the streets across the country to protest against rising fuel prices. The protesters, dubbed "Les gilets jaunes" (the yellow vests) after the high-visibility jackets they adopted as a symbol of their complaint, blocked roundabouts, burned effigies and clashed with the police. They were angry about the almost 20 percent increase in the price of diesel since the start of the year, as well as the planned fuel tax hike President ...
China blasts Zim 'special economic zones': No roads, water and you call that special economic zones. By Muza Mpofu   10 December 2018 By Zimbo24news Team The China-Zimbabwe relationship is viewed by many as bad because China is said to be enjoying unfair advantages but the giant Asian state has business ethics, acting ambassador Zhao Baogang has said. He said this during a recent Confederation of Zimbabwe Industries (CZI) and University of Zimbabwe (UZ)’s Faculty of Industry and Commerce business symposium in the capital. Ambassador Zhao Baogang said Zimbabwe had faced many challenges for a long time, adding that he hoped the new government will turn things around. “China saw an opportunity in Zimbabwe and we appreciate our working ethics. We don’t support corruption and we don’t implement policies in the same manner that Zimbabwe does. In China, we first put them (policies) on trial and implement only if they are acceptable,” said Baogang. He criticised the cou...
Rhodes and the Church: Two sides of colonialism By Dr Vimbai Gukwe Chivaura May 29, 2014   Zimbo24news Team THE Church did not come to liberate us or take us to Heaven. It came as a coloniser to take our land and heritage from us, just like Rhodes. It worked together with Rhodes and got generous grants of money and wealth from our land to build churches and do their colonial work. A History of Christian Missions in Zimbabwe by CJM Zvobgo tells us that the London Missionary Society (LMS) started their first mission station at Inyati in 1859. The second was at Hope Fountain in 1870. Inyati farm was 8 000 acres. Hope Fountain was 6 000 acres. They did not have a single convert from 1859 to 1880. Between 1881 and 1883, they got 12 converts. When they realised that they could not make converts under Lobengula’s regime, they invited Rhodes to overthrow him to pave the way for Christianity. “Until the Matabele are put down by brute force, there will never be any pro...
US Senate Committee on Foreign Relations: Lessons for Zimbabwe. Opinion . 08 December 2018 By Zimbo24news Team On the eve of another year we get yet another rude awakening from the US government when everybody was filled with optimism that indeed Zimbabwe could be headed for a new beggining as re-engagement effort begin to bear fruits. Its in no doubt that the Americans are masters of deception. They promise you one thing and they deliver the other. They preach one gospel in daytime and at night time practice a different one. They have proved beyond reasonable doubt that they are an insincere partner and that infact believing anything they say is like betting for a pregnant horse. The American Senators once again had an opportunity to recite yet another well choreographed presentation before the Senate which clearly was a gimmick to pretend to be democratic by inviting presenters from this side as ably represented by one business man Mr Joe Mutizwa who did well presenting a...
